PM Surya Ghar solar subsidy in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu

The central subsidy (same across India)
Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the central government pays ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW. The maximum is ₹78,000.

Tamil Nadu adds up to ₹22,000
Tamil Nadu announced a state top-up on top of the central subsidy through G.O. (Ms) No. 102 of the Energy Department, dated 19 September 2026, as reported.

As reported, the top-up is for residential consumers in Tamil Nadu who registered on the PM Surya Ghar portal on or after 5 August 2026, is limited to the first 1,00,000 eligible applicants, and is paid by direct transfer to your bank account. We check your eligibility before you book.
Puducherry homes
Homes in Puducherry get the full central subsidy above. The Puducherry government has also proposed its own top-up for rooftop solar on top of it. Because the amount and the eligibility rules change, we confirm the current Puducherry figure in your written quote, so you never plan around a number that no longer applies.
Who gets the money, and when
- The subsidy is paid to the person named on the EB connection, straight into their bank account.
- It is paid after the system is installed, inspected and net-metered. Until then you pay the full price or use a bank loan.
- The panels must be made in India (DCR, ALMM listed) and installed by a vendor registered on the portal for your DISCOM.
- The system must be grid-connected, on a home with its own electricity connection.

Subsidy questions
Is the subsidy the same for 5 kW as for 3 kW?
The central subsidy stops at ₹78,000, so a 5 kW system gets the same central amount as 3 kW. In Tamil Nadu the state top-up also stops at ₹22,000 for 3 kW and above.
How long does the subsidy take to arrive?
It is released after the inspection and net meter, once the claim is approved on the portal. Timelines depend on your DISCOM and the government, so we track it for you and share every update.
Can I take a loan and still get the subsidy?
Yes. Public-sector banks give collateral-free solar loans under PM Surya Ghar. Many customers use the subsidy, when it arrives, to prepay part of the loan.
